For trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and phobias.
For couples navigating relocation, cross-cultural relationships, and expat adjustment.
For expat adjustment, career change, neurodivergence, anxiety, and depression.
For families navigating international school access, parenting through relocation, and raising children across cultures.

Cool Blue Wellbeing was founded by Shelagh Maudsley-Deegan MSc, a counsellor and psychotherapist who leads the practice remotely as Clinical Lead. She brings more than 30 years of international experience across counselling, psychological support, and education, with particular expertise in trauma, life transitions, neurodiversity, and emotional wellbeing.
Services are delivered through a small network of internationally and locally qualified practitioners. Where clinically appropriate, external specialist consultants may also be involved, including professionals experienced in supporting children, teenagers, families, and schools. Each enquiry is considered individually so that clients can be directed towards the most appropriate practitioner or service.
Sessions are one-to-one in a private, professional setting. Online sessions are available for clients who prefer remote therapy or are outside Penang. Both formats follow the same professional standards and confidentiality protections.
EMDR sessions are scheduled at the end of the day — you will want time afterwards to rest and process, and are not conducted on weekends. Your therapist will discuss what to expect before you begin, so there are no surprises.
What you discuss in session is confidential. For parents: while your child’s wellbeing is the priority, what they share in their own sessions is protected — this boundary is essential for therapeutic trust. Confidentiality has legal limits: if there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, appropriate steps will be taken, and you will be informed.
A calm, private space designed for focused therapeutic work — professional without feeling clinical, and comfortable enough to talk openly.
Cool Blue Wellbeing recommends a course of at least 8 sessions for best results — therapy takes time, and clients who attend consistently see greater benefit. Sessions can also be booked one at a time. Talk to Shelagh about what works for your circumstances.
Payment is by bank transfer. Receipts are provided for all payments and can be used for insurance claims where your policy covers counselling or psychotherapy.
Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged at the full session rate.

Yes. A major meta-analysis (Andrews et al., 2018, Journal of Anxiety Disorders) found online therapy as effective as in-person therapy for anxiety, depression, and trauma. Many clients also value attending from home. Cool Blue Wellbeing offers both: in-person sessions in Penang and secure online sessions for those who prefer remote therapy or live elsewhere.
It depends on your needs. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication. A clinical psychologist conducts assessments and diagnoses. A therapist or counsellor provides talking therapy. Cool Blue Wellbeing offers professional counselling and psychotherapy — if medication or a formal assessment is indicated, you will be guided to the right professional.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy for processing traumatic memories. It uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — to help the brain reprocess stuck memories so they lose their emotional charge. EMDR is effective for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and phobias, and can be integrated into couples and individual therapy.
No. Cool Blue Wellbeing is a professional counselling practice open to people of all faiths, or none. Therapy here is grounded in evidence-based psychological approaches — not faith, spiritual frameworks, or religious doctrine. Clients of all backgrounds and worldviews are welcome. The work stays within the professional therapy tradition.
The approach is matched to you and what you’re dealing with, not the other way round. Cool Blue Wellbeing offers EMDR therapy for trauma, talking therapy for life transitions (expat adjustment, career change, neurodivergence, identity shifts), couples therapy, and family and parenting support — particularly for families navigating international school access and relocation.
Yes — start with a "Get to Know Me" session, a single exploratory session to experience what therapy here is like and decide if it feels right. Therapy is personal, and finding the right fit matters. For most concerns, though, Cool Blue Wellbeing recommends a course of at least 8 sessions to see lasting results. Clients who commit to a course are consistently more likely to see full benefit than those who attend sporadically. If booking a full course upfront isn’t right for you — for scheduling, financial, or personal reasons — talk to Shelagh. The structure adapts to your circumstances, including the irregular schedules of expat and international life. No one is turned away for being unable to commit in advance.
Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged at the full session rate. This protects session time for all clients — a late cancellation cannot be offered to someone else. Giving as much notice as possible helps keep the practice running fairly for everyone.
Payment is by bank transfer. Receipts are provided and can be used for insurance claims where your policy covers counselling or psychotherapy. Payment details are provided when you book your first session.
Your privacy is protected under Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). What you discuss in session is confidential. Confidentiality has legal limits: if there is a risk of serious harm, appropriate steps will be taken — and you will be informed.
BPS is the British Psychological Society — the UK’s professional body for psychologists. GMBPsS (Graduate Membership) indicates a BPS-accredited psychology degree. CCPA is the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association — Canada’s national professional association for counsellors. These credentials mean the practitioner is accountable to established professional standards and codes of ethics recognised internationally.
Shelagh Maudsley-Deegan holds internationally recognised British and Canadian credentials: Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society (GMBPsS) and Professional Membership of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). These reflect rigorous accredited training and adherence to professional codes of ethics. While Malaysia operates its own counsellor registration system (LKM), many international and expat clients seek practitioners with internationally recognised credentials — which is what Cool Blue Wellbeing provides.
